In Mumbai, home to over 18 million people, more than 5,000 “dabbawallas” – lunchbox couriers – navigate chaotic streets to deliver lunches, lovingly prepared by housewives, to working men across the city.
In this enchanting TIFF Tuesday offering, a mistaken lunchbox delivery brings together two very different people – a neglected housewife and a grumpy widower. This mix-up helps pave the way for an unlikely romance as the two disparate characters begin a correspondence through notes and letters left in the seemingly innocent lunchbox. Outside the confines of their daily lives, both characters feel a sense of freedom as they start to express themselves in new ways, leading them both to question how they might find happiness.
Cinematically, the cooking of a meal, letters being read, or through a simple trip on a crowded train, the film’s small moments culminate in big impact.
