Playhouse Friends ‘get happy’ with Judy Garland Story

judyThe Judy Garland Story is a nostalgic musical journey through the life of the legendary performer. Written and performed by Debbie Collins, this show is the cornerstone of this year’s Friends of the Playhouse Gala planned for Saturday, October 17.

This fast paced revue covers Garland’s life from the age of 2 ½ to the time of her death in 1969. Her well-loved songs will have the audience singing along during the show and tearing up by the time they reach the touching final concert scene.

After successful runs at the Studio theatre in Orillia, a touring show for the Smile Theatre Company, The Stirling Festival Theatre, Brockville Arts Centre, The Gibson Centre in Alliston, and several fundraisers, this musical tribute has proven itself the perfect entertainment choice for audiences who love drama, song and dance.

Hospice coordinator and Playhouse manager Heather Brough thinks this show is the perfect match for the Friends of the Playhouse Gala.

“We’re restoring this beautiful old building and we’re trying to showcase and honour the past,” Brough says. “We’re doing what we can to ensure that the Playhouse stands strong as the centre for performing arts in our region and this dramatic tribute to the life and career of Judy Garland seemed like a perfect fit – honouring a legend to honour a legend.”

The Friends of the Playhouse Gala will start with “Get Happy Hour” featuring cocktails and desserts in the newly restored Playhouse Lobby. The Gala is the big reveal for the lobby and the new Courthouse Bar. The desserts for the reception are being prepared by none other than Bancroft food legend, Bruce Kellar who promises to deliver tastes that are somewhere over the rainbow.

All proceeds from the Gala will help to repair and restore the aging theatre. Those who are passionate about arts, culture and history are invited to be recognized as an official Friend of the Village Playhouse by making a $100 donation to the fund.

Gala tickets are $40 and are on sale now at Harvest Moon, Posies, Hospice House and online at Gala tickets include the reception and the show.
