Live comedy from a concert pianist creates magic at Playhouse

Hagen’s combination of self-deprecating stories, dry wit and beautiful piano music creates an intimate environment where the laughs flow as easily as the Liszt. With her warm voice, and zinger after zinger, Hagen’s show feels a lot like spending an evening out with your best gal pal – where you have a few drinks and catch-up on the craziness of life, love and music.

Hagen’s show has received rave reviews across the Country and she’s looking forward to bringing her one-woman sit-down music-comedy show to Bancroft. She’s also threatening to end the show with a live auction of a “super duper high-end cardboard grand piano,” if the audience is up for the additional excitement.

Hagen’s comedic ability comes to her as naturally as her talent with the piano and she’s happily balancing comedic recognition with her well-earned musical accolades. For her role as “classical pianist”, Sarah Hagen was awarded as the BC Touring Council’s 2015 Touring Artist of the Year.

Her show is based on much of the feedback that she has received as a pianist and with a performance career taking her from Hornby Island, BC to Gothenburg, Sweden, and onto Carnegie Hall as a First Prize Winner in the 2013 Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, she says her favourite audience reviews from concerts include: “She played the piano” and “It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.”

With material like that being handed to her on a regular basis, it’s easy to understand how Hagen has transformed her award-winning role as “concert pianist” into a stand-up, or rather, sit-down piano-filled comedic performer.

“Perk-up, pianist!” is a uniquely charming music and storytelling experience that takes you deep inside the world of a touring classical musician.
